Protecting Our Seniors: World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Dakshin Dinajpur
On June 15, 2026, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Dakshin Dinajpur, organized a vital Legal Awareness Camp in the Balurghat block. This event was held in observance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the rights of the elderly and the urgent need to stop abuse against senior citizens.
Why This Camp Was Held
In many rural and socially backward areas, senior citizens often face significant challenges, ranging from financial exploitation to social neglect. Many are unaware that there are robust legal frameworks in India designed specifically to protect them.
Key Legal Protections Discussed
During the camp, our team of Adhikar Mitras and Para-Legal Volunteers (PLVs)—including Soma Paul Saha, Jaya Mandal, Supriya Sarkar, Jhithika Barman, Ila Mandal, and Tandra Roy—educated the local community on several critical legal rights:
- The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007: This law ensures that children and heirs are legally obligated to provide maintenance for their elderly parents.
- Identifying Abuse: We discussed how to recognize emotional, physical, and financial abuse, and provided guidance on what steps to take if someone is being mistreated.
- How to Access Free Legal Aid: We explained how any citizen can approach the DLSA for mediation, legal advice, or representation in court without the burden of heavy legal fees.
